For over 13 years, the Mbera camp, located 60 km from the Malian border and over 1,000 km from Nouakchott, has been home to tens of thousands of Malian refugees fleeing violence in Mali’s central and northern regions. Since February 2024, Haiti’s security crisis, especially in Port-au-Prince, has worsened, driving thousands of families to seek refuge in makeshift camps where living conditions are extremely precarious. In response, ALIMA has been offering essential medical aid to support the most vulnerable for the past year.
The Samifo Centre, led by director Giancarlo Santone, stands as Europe’s only publicly funded clinic specifically treating trauma and PTSD in refugees, offering comprehensive healthcare and psychological support to those fleeing violence worldwide.
Working with Maine Immigrant and Refugee Services, the Research Program on Children and Adversity at Boston College, led by Dr. Theresa Betancourt, is pioneering a program in Maine to support Afghan refugee families, addressing trauma and promoting mental well-being through culturally sensitive interventions.
